Nintendo reveals that Minecraft was the number one download on Switch in Japan, plus the overall top 30

Japan is a remote gaming market that has historically presented a formidable challenge for European and North American developers. However, Minecraft’s seemingly endless appeal has spread there.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, the phenomenally popular game from Mojang has sold over 500,000 units digitally across the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita.

The Vita sales figures are the most impressive among them, having sold 200,000 units since its release on Sony’s handheld device at the end of October last year. As a result, the company now intends to release a packaged version of the game in March.

Of course, that only accounts for a small portion of the overall sales of the Minecraft series, with the worldwide sales of the Pocket Edition alone surpassing 30 million as of last month and the PC version adding another 18 million.

In any case, one of Microsoft’s few success stories in Japan can be indirectly attributed to Minecraft.

Total sales volume of best-selling video games for consoles in Japan in 2021 (in million units)
Game title (console) Units sold in millions
Ring Fit Adventure (Switch) 0.9
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) 0.82
Minecraft (Switch) 0.71
Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch) 0.7

The History of Japan in Minecraft

While Dragon Quest Builders 1 and 2 have nicer graphics, a better plot that is more enjoyable to play through, classic roleplaying elements we all know and love, and is just a deep and fresh take on the formula (that Minecraft itself could learn a lot from), Minecraft simply has so much more complexity and freedom in its gameplay. It is also more well-known, and rightfully so, as it was the first of its kind, the original. Man, its the best selling game of all time.

Despite being such an introvert that he’d never be found near a party, Ryan can recite the first 151 Pokémon in order off by heart, a skill he refers to as his “party trick.” He would much rather stay in and play Mario Kart and eat pizza, and we can’t really blame him for that.

Although I understand that graphics aren’t everything, the blocky graphics from Minecraft are still too unsightly for me to accept. I am unable to even look at the cubic blocks of people, animals, and environments. As I really like to see gorgeous environments with Chibi characters walking around, something that I really dream of, I prefer cute Chibi characters like on Portal Knights or Dragon Quest Builders. However, I actually prefer Dragon Quest Builders and Portal Knights over Minecraft, just as I prefer underappreciated hidden gem games to overrated ones.

Well, the game’s Mario theme expansion pack shows that there is more to Minecraft than just blocky graphics. Without those, I seriously doubt that Minecraft on Switch would have gained any traction in Japan. It’s not surprising that the game is still selling because Nintendo is assisting Microsoft with its local marketing there.

A total of 220,351 copies of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD were sold, keeping it in second place. Additionally, the July 15 release Crayon Shin-chan: Ora to Hakase no Natsuyasumi – Owaranai Nanokakan no Tabi rose in position from 5th to 3rd with 13,798 that week and a total of 156,274 views.

The remaining Top 30 movies for the week of August 2–8, 2021, can be seen below.

After NEO: The World Ends with You’s successful launch, the Switch version fell from first to 23rd place during its second week, while the PS4 version was completely absent from the Top 30 list. However, during a weak week for sales, Minecraft topped the charts with 14,912 copies sold.

Minecraft once again tops the Japanese game sales rankings for the week of August 2–8, 2021, despite there being no new releases in the Top 30 list.

For both Japan and the rest of the world, Nintendo has provided a complete list of the Switch eShop’s highest-earning titles. One example is that Minecraft is the best-selling game in Japan, demonstrating how well-liked the now-Microsoft-led franchise is still today.

Stardew Valley, Minecraft, Sonic Mania, and Rocket League were the top games in other regions (developer Eric Barone might be the next person to purchase a home in Beverly Hills), with Stardew Valley coming in second. A clear turning point has been reached for third parties on the Switch because, aside from Snipperclips, the entire top five outside of Japan is dominated by multi-platform releases. This is something that wouldn’t have been possible on Wii U.
