Although sugar cane is arguably the simplest crop to grow in Minecraft, farming it is quite another story. It doesn’t need any light to grow and can be planted on a variety of blocks, including dirt, grass, and even sand. But you must make sure that the plot of land where you plant this crop is near a body of water. This means that if you still don’t have a water bucket, you’ll need to figure out a way to either funnel water from the river or ocean to your farm or plant the crop nearby. Although each of these options has advantages of their own, in some biomes or environments they may not be as effective.
Natural generation
In areas with access to water, sugar cane can grow naturally as two (1118 chance), three (518 chance), or four (218 chance) block tall plants. If the world generator stacks two smaller sugar canes on top of each other, rare taller canes will result. It generates in approximately 0. Considering that they only produce near bodies of water, 8 sugar cane per chunk
In any overworld biome, sugar canes attempt to produce 10 times, which requires water. With an additional 10 attempts in swamp biomes and 50 in desert biomes, sugar cane is twice as common in swamps and six times as common in desert biomes, resulting in sugar cane-lined river banks that cut through deserts.
