We have all the information you need to know about Minecraft Dungeons’ crossplay support, whether you’re wondering if it works on PC, Xbox, or PS4.
Minecraft Dungeons, an isometric game based on the original, pixelated survival world, lets you unleash your inner dungeon crawler. In either single-player or multiplayer modes, players can fight off mobs, but being able to use cross-platform play can greatly improve the experience.
So without further ado, let’s examine the specifics of Minecraft Dungeon’s cross-platform support. Article continues after ad.
What is cross-play for Minecraft Dungeons?
Most online games typically restrict play to other users of the same platform as you. This prevents, for instance, people playing Minecraft Dungeons on an Xbox One from collaborating with their friends on a Nintendo Switch. These limitations are removed by cross-play, which enables players to play with their friends on any platform by using a single account to connect all platforms. For Minecraft, this is the Microsoft Account.
In a recent free update for all platforms, Minecraft Dungeons received cross-play support with version number 1. 6. 0. 0 (later versions will also work). You can play wherever Minecraft Dungeons is available as long as your device has this update or a later version installed and you are signed into a Microsoft Account.
How do I enable cross-play for Minecraft Dungeons?
Since platforms like Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch don’t naturally communicate with one another, the majority of games that support cross-play require a shared account across platforms to make it possible. For Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons, youll need a Microsoft Account. Its native integration with Xbox and Windows 10 makes for even simpler play, and it offers tons of security and privacy controls.
You don’t need to take any further action if you’re using an Xbox console, including the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, or Windows 10. Those using the PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch will have to take a few extra steps.
Check out our in-depth guide for parents on Xbox and accounts for more information on the security and privacy options a Microsoft Account provides you, and think about using the Xbox Family Settings app for more control from your mobile device.
The steps for cross-play with an Xbox Series X are shown below for the Nintendo Switch, but they should be similar for Playstation.
- Open Minecraft Dungeons on your Nintendo Switch or PS4.
- Youll get a message to “Sign in for online co-op. ” Press the corresponding button on the screen to begin.
- Youll be asked to “Sign in with a Microsoft Account. ” Head to microsoft. com/link on a different device, such as a phone, tablet, or computer (opens in new tab).
- Sign-in to your Microsoft Account or create one for free.
- When youre asked, enter the code provided by Minecraft Dungeons.
- Minecraft Dungeons will verify and connect with your Microsoft Account. Wait on this screen until its done.
- When Minecraft Dungeons successfully connects to your Microsoft Account, a confirmation screen will appear. Hit continue to move to the main screen.
- As soon as Minecraft Dungeons and your Microsoft Account are linked, you should be able to play online games with friends. Enjoy! Online multiplayer, including cross-play, on Xbox, Switch, and PS requires an Xbox Live Gold, Nintendo Online, or Playstation Plus subscription, respectively.
There are a few settings that players can use to personalize their online experience. You can enable or disable online play and sign out of your Microsoft Account by going to the “Configure Online Play” section in the game settings. On PS4, you can also disable cross-platform play here. Cross-platform play will always be available on other platforms, but Microsoft Accounts offer a ton of customization options for your online and privacy settings.
How do I play with friends using cross-play for Minecraft Dungeons?
Since this is all built on a Microsoft Account, playing with friends requires knowing their gamertags, or their username with Microsoft and Xbox. Once you’ve connected your Microsoft Account with Minecraft Dungeons, you’re ready to start playing with friends from other platforms. When you created your Microsoft Account for gaming, you should have selected a gamertag (you can change it if you want). By using their gamertags, you can locate your friends, and by using yours, other players can locate you.
To make things even simpler, you can do everything from Minecraft Dungeons, including find friends, make and join games, and even invite other players (with some restrictions).
Toggle between an online and offline game lobby (offline means that online co-op will not be enabled or possible) and a private game (making it so that players cannot join randomly) from this Friends menu when you start a new game. Join friends who are already in a lobby by searching for their gamertags.
You can invite friends who are online to join you in the game lobby once it has been created. Keep in mind that depending on where your friend is playing, this may not always work. The Xbox and Windows platforms have excellent invite functionality, but Switch and PS4 can only send invites, not receive them. This means that setting up games on Switch and PS4 can be a little more difficult.
The Friends menu is always visible in the top right corner of your screen and can be accessed from the main menu or the camp by pressing a button. If you are in your own lobby, you can use this menu to view your current game session and see who else is in the lobby. If you don’t want players on your friends list to be able to join randomly, you can still toggle to a private game, but if you want to go offline, you’ll need to exit the game and create a new offline lobby.
Cross-play in Minecraft Dungeons is relatively new, so there will inevitably be some growing pains. A second attempt almost always resolves errors, increasing the likelihood that they are one-time problems with connections. Restart the game and check that cross-platform multiplayer is enabled in your Microsoft Account online settings if you frequently experience trouble connecting with friends across platform boundaries.
Minecraft explores the dungeons.
The next chapter of the Minecraft saga is called Minecraft Dungeons, and developer Mojang Studios has once again produced a masterpiece. There isn’t much more you could ask for in an epic dungeon crawling ARPG than awesome co-op combat and powerful loot at a ridiculously low price.
