Obviously, Johnson & Johnson Baby Creamy Oil is meant to be used for babies on their sensitive and delicate skin to keep it hydrated and soft. We’ve been using a variety of Johnson & Johnson products on Miles since he was born and we love that the brand is affordable and easily accessible for us first-time parents. I also love the smell of all these gentle baby products, it’s so delicious! So the fact that it can serve double duty and also repel those unwanted insects is a win-win!
The combination of water, cetyl alcohol, soybean oil, shea butter extract, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, cocoa seed butter, and mineral oil apparently acts as a barrier for your skin. However, since I’m neither a scientist nor a doctor, I’m not sure how the aloe vera and vitamin E work to make this baby lotion simultaneously keep skin soft while being a bug repellent. But hey, it works! Because baby oils are difficult for mosquitoes to bite through, you won’t get bitten.

Despite numerous articles (1) extolling the virtues of baby cream oil, particularly Jonhson’s baby oil, the claims are not supported by any concrete data. The Cleveland Health Council’s 1924 paper is the closest thing we have to conclusive proof in favor of baby oil. This study only establishes that non-toxic oils, such as baby cream oils, are effective at eliminating mosquito larvae (2).
In fact, a 1990 student study completely refutes the notion that baby oil works well as a mosquito repellent (3). Due to a lack of rigorous research and evidence, it is currently impossible to know whether baby cream oil is as beneficial as some claim, even though the evidence against it appears to outweigh the testimonials you see on your local news.
Johnson’s produces quality goods, but none of them are effective at keeping mosquitoes away. Baby oil doesn’t contain DEET, which is a highly recommended ingredient in high-quality repellent products. But hey, they use aloe vera, and even though it may feel good, adult mosquitoes won’t benefit much from aloe vera, though it might be helpful for larvae.
One study at the University of Florida demonstrated that, when compared to DEET, oil isn’t as effective at deterring mosquitoes as DEET. Avon’s bath oil is as close to baby oil as we can get in studies (4).
The main problem is that baby oil doesn’t contain any ingredients that mosquitoes find repulsive. For instance, Johnson Baby Cream Oil contains aloe vera and vitamin E, neither of which have much of an impact on mosquitoes.
Baby oil might be a viable alternative if it contained some DEET, but DEET wouldn’t be pleasant to apply topically. You can only currently use baby oil to either kill the larvae or lessen the itching from a fresh mosquito bite.
