This Minecraft tutorial demonstrates how to secure a chest with a lock so that it can only be opened by a player who is in possession of an object bearing a particular name.

The steps for making a locked chest are listed below:
- Open the chat window by pressing the forward slash key.
- Enter the following command to spawn a locked chest: /setblock ~ ~ ~ chest[facing=west]{Lock:”Chest Key”} replace.
Natural generation
In Beta 1. 4. The game randomly selects a location to generate a locked chest in each new chunk if the date is April 1st of any year. A locked chest will appear if the selected location is in the air and has a solid block below.
The initial intent of the locked chests was to direct players to the Minecraft Store. The use button would cause the dialog box to the left to appear when clicked.
This functionality was exclusive to Beta 1. 4; all later versions did not trigger this.
Placement and orientation
Locked chests would choose their facing direction based on the surrounding blocks, generally attempting to face away from walls. They would turn to face away from any blocks that were in the way of their face.
Prior to Beta 1. 8, referred to the behavior that was typical for directional blocks like chests and furnaces. From Beta 1. From version 8 onward, said blocks would instead face the player who was placing them, and they wouldn’t change their facing direction in response to other blocks nearby. Being an unsupported block, the locked chest was exempt from this change and continued acting as it had before it was removed, making it unique in this regard.
Locked chests could be used as fuel, lasting 1. 5 items, the same as a regular chest.

Data history
Issues with the removed block “Locked Chest” cannot be resolved because it is a removed block.
- Steve Co. Supply Crate is a reference to the Mann Co. Team Fortress 2’s Supply Crate[3], where a key must be purchased for $2 49 in the in-game shop called Mann Co. Store in order to open the crate. [4].
- When the locked chest was first introduced to Minecraft, it had a similar appearance to a regular chest. However, after Beta 1. The locked chest, a deprecated block at the time of version 8, was left with the old model and as a result grew larger than an ordinary chest when the chest model was updated to be smaller than a full block in that version.
- Locked chests, as opposed to ordinary chests, emit a light level 15 into the environment.
